Across classrooms in England and internationally, teachers are increasingly working with diverse groups of learners who present a wide range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). According to the UK Department for Education (DfE, 2024), approximately 18% of pupils are identified as having SEND, meaning that virtually every classroom contains learners who require adaptations to access the curriculum effectively.
Despite this, many teachers worry that supporting SEND pupils requires specialist interventions, expensive resources, or entirely separate lesson plans. Research suggests the opposite. As schools continue to face increasing levels of SEND need alongside growing resource pressures, the most sustainable solution remains high-quality adaptive teaching. Small adjustments, consistently applied, can have a profound impact on learning, wellbeing, and life chances.
Ultimately, effective inclusion is not about doing more. It is about doing the right things more consistently.
